Common questions
What is the difference between markup and margin?
Markup is profit as a share of the cost price; margin is profit as a share of the selling price. A drug that costs 1,000 and sells for 1,250 has a 25% markup but only a 20% margin, because the 250 profit is a quarter of the cost and a fifth of the price. Your accounts and your profit and loss report show margin, so set prices with the margin you actually need in mind.
How do I price a card or sachet from a pack?
Divide the pack cost by the number of cards, sachets or units in it, apply the same markup, and round up. Because each unit is rounded up on its own, selling a pack card by card often brings in a little more than selling it whole. The calculator shows both prices and the difference.
What markup should a pharmacy use?
There is no single right number. It depends on the product, what nearby pharmacies charge, how fast it sells and your running costs. Many pharmacies use a lower percentage on expensive, fast-moving lines and a higher one on cheap, slow ones. Some countries regulate medicine markups, so check the rules where you trade. The ladder under the result shows the price and margin at several markups so you can compare.
Should I round my prices?
Rounding up to a neat figure makes change easier at the counter and protects your margin when costs creep up. The calculator always rounds up, never down, and shows the markup and margin after rounding so you can see what the neat price really earns.
Does it include VAT or sales tax?
No. Enter the cost you pay without any tax you can reclaim, and add any sales tax you must charge on top of the selling price it gives you.
Is it free?
Yes. No signup and no email. It is made by QuickPharms, pharmacy software that tracks your cost on every delivery and shows the real margin per product.
